Weekly Round Up

January 23rd, 2010 · No Comments · Bloggish, Computery, Crosspost, Food, Local, Photography, stuff

Getting into the habit of reviewing the interesting Internetty / bloggy / foody / &tc.-y stuff from the week is something I would like to establish.  It gives me a chance to reflect and review all the garbage I saw all week, determine what was actually interesting and not heat-of-the-moment cool, and hopefully I can [...]

Homemade mayonnaise – deliciously simple!

January 9th, 2010 · No Comments · Food

Using the below YouTube instructions, I was able to recreate the mayo this guy made pretty well. My only mistake was using Extra Virgin Olive Oil instead of something a little less… flavorful.  Here is a pic of how mine ended up (excuse the flash – no good light in the kitchen…)

Daily Photo Jan. 6 – a day late

January 7th, 2010 · No Comments · Food, Photography

Yep, I’m already late!  I have just been floored busy this week and have had no time.  I will make time this evening to get at least some sort of daily photo up.  The below pic was taken of one of the best pizzas I have ever made.  I’m very happy with the way my [...]

Alton Brown on knife skills – a quick intro

December 29th, 2009 · No Comments · Food

Alton Brown’s ‘Good Eats’ has been around for a while, and sometimes I find an episode on YouTube that could really help the beginner / seasoned home cook. This particular is a quick intro to knife skills and has some very basic info about knives, and shows quickly how to prep some veggies.
Part 1:

Quick video teaching how to stretch pizza dough / toss pizza dough.

December 22nd, 2009 · No Comments · Food

This video is from a cooking school – showing the students how to properly stretch the Sourdough pizza dough, then how to toss properly.  I will try it out at home tonight and report back on my success or failure.  The part I took away from this video was to press down and make an [...]

Pomegranate goodness – how to prepare the easy way!

November 30th, 2009 · No Comments · Food

I caught this post (via Lifehacker) about how to properly prepare a pomegranate. Though part of the fun of eating these is the mess you make taking them apart at the table, this method makes it wicked easy to get the seeds / fruit out of the pomegranate and get rid of the rest [...]

The trick to great home fries is….

November 1st, 2009 · No Comments · Food

It’s very simple, actually.  I have no idea why I didn’t figure this out years ago.  To make great home fries, simply boil the potatoes whole for fifteen minutes then cool them down in the fridge before chopping up and frying.  Otherwise you over-fry them to get them cooked all the way through or you [...]

Focaccia win!

August 11th, 2009 · No Comments · Food

Wow – I’m just in awe of how well this bread came out.  Using overnight retardation of the rise really helped.  I followed the recipe in The Bread Baker’s Apprentice.  The crust came out nice and flaky and the crumb was moist.  I didn’t bake it more than 12 or so minutes at 450-500 due [...]

Brandon’s down and dirty grilled wings and corn.

July 12th, 2009 · No Comments · Food

This is one of my favorite meals.  It’s perfect for a summer afternoon, and requires very little thought or work.  I love chicken wings, but can’t get them perfect in the fryer at home, and grilling them is the best way I make them.
First, buy whole wings.  Not ‘party wings’ that are already cut apart.  [...]

Product Love: my wok

February 12th, 2009 · No Comments · Food

I have a simple, cheap wok purchased at Ikea for $7.99 last year. I love it. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10112375. I just made a great beef stir fry with rice which was both inexpensive and really, really tasty. I have no idea why I took so long to figure out how to cook with [...]
