I have a simple, cheap wok purchased at Ikea for $7.99 last year. I love it. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10112375. I just made a great beef stir fry with rice which was both inexpensive and really, really tasty. I have no idea why I took so long to figure out how to cook with one of these.
While I was looking for a picture of this Ikea wok that I have, I stumbled across a post about a great stir fry class over in Miami: http://mangoandlime.net/2007/08/13/so-you-wanna-be-a-wok-star/. If only I could find something like this in Boston!
One thing I am quickly learning is that stir fry cooking is a bit healthier (or at least can be) than other types of cooking. Since turning 30, I have been trying to eat healthier and keep a healthier lifestyle, so this was important to learn. The idea in that article that wok cooking can be something of an alternative to a mainstream diet really resonated with me.
I’m sure there are fancier, non stick woks and other more expensive alternatives, but the $8 Ikea one has served me well so far.
